A family meal in Gougouo, Foumbot, Noun Division, has turned tragic, leaving five people d-ead and 13 others hospitalised.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, September 9, after 18 members of the same household reportedly ate kontchap, a traditional maize and beans dish.
Shortly after the meal, several family members developed severe symptoms, including vomiting, stomach pain and loss of consciousness. Five subsequently d-ied, including Irène Mfout, the mother who prepared the meal, and some of her children.
The 13 survivors were rushed to Foumbot District Hospital, with some reportedly in critical condition.
Authorities have opened an investigation, while samples of the food and ingredients have reportedly been collected for laboratory analysis.
Possible causes, including food contamination and chemical poisoning, are being investigated. Reports of a reptile allegedly found around the cooking area remain unconfirmed.
The exact cause of the tragedy will be established through medical tests and the ongoing investigation.
