03/10/2026President Paul Biya has authorised two major international financing agreements worth a combined more than FCFA 367 billion to support road infrastructure projects across Cameroon. The first decree, signed on October 2, 2026, authorises the Minister of Economy, Planning and Regional Development to sign an instalment sale financing agreement with the Islamic Development Bank worth EUR 212.35 million, approximately FCFA 139.2 billion. The funding will support the Douala-Bafoussam Road Rehabilitation Project (PRRDB), targeting one of Cameroon’s key transport routes linking the economic capital to the West Region. A second financing agreement involves a EUR 347.5 million World Bank credit, estimated at about FCFA 228 billion, for the Douala-Bangui Economic Corridor Project. The corridor will connect Douala through Yaoundé, Bertoua and Garoua-Boulaï before extending towards the Central African Republic. It is considered an important trade and transit route within Central Africa. Combined, the two agreements provide more than FCFA 367 billion in financing for major road infrastructure, focusing on corridors that are important to domestic transportation, regional trade and economic activity. The financing also comes with implications for Cameroon’s public debt. According to the information provided, full disbursement of the World Bank credit could push the country’s public debt stock to approximately FCFA 15.84 trillion, with the Islamic Development Bank financing adding further obligations. Both presidential decrees were signed in Yaoundé and are expected to be published urgently in Cameroon’s Official Gazette in English and French. The financing is expected to support the rehabilitation and development of strategic road networks, while also raising questions about the long-term cost of infrastructure financed through additional borrowing.

02/10/2026What if your laptop could tell when you were losing focus during an online class — and wake you up before you missed the lesson? That is the idea behind a system developed by Cameroonian software engineering graduate Randy Kimbi during his final-year studies at PHIBMAT Douala. Randy built a system that uses a laptop’s built-in camera to monitor a learner’s face in real time. It can identify whether the learner is attentive, distracted or drowsy and trigger an audio alert when signs of reduced attention are detected. The system requires no special devices, wearable sensors or expensive equipment. It works with technology already available on a standard laptop. Using Python, OpenCV, MediaPipe Face Mesh and PyGame, Randy’s system analyses facial features and eye activity, including prolonged eye closure, to detect possible drowsiness. The project earned an “Excellent” assessment from the jury. Beyond the technical achievement, Randy’s innovation addresses a practical challenge facing online learners: staying engaged throughout a lesson. His approach is built around affordability and accessibility, making use of tools that can be deployed without requiring sophisticated hardware. The project also reflects Randy’s wider vision through Gizami, an online academy he is developing to equip Cameroonian university students with practical skills in artificial intelligence and digital technology that can create real economic opportunities. For Randy, education is not simply about producing good content. It is also about ensuring that students remain present and engaged enough to learn. His graduation project is therefore more than an academic requirement. It is an example of how young Cameroonian innovators can use accessible technology to tackle everyday challenges and build solutions suited to local realities.

02/10/2026The reconstructed section of the R0606 regional road at the Dschang Cliff has officially been reopened to traffic this Thursday, October 1, in Foréké-Dschang. Public Works Minister Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi presided over the ceremony, marking a new stage in the rehabilitation of the strategic road linking communities in the Menoua Division. The reopening brought together administrative authorities, local dignitaries and residents, with Jean Nkuete, Vice Prime Minister and Secretary-General of the CPDM Central Committee, and Minister Delegate Jean De Dieu Momo among those present. The Governor of the West Region and other regional administrative officials also attended the ceremony. 23/09/2026Three soldiers attached to a military detachment in Matouke have been k-illed in an ambush along the Matouke–Kotto road in Moungo Division, Littoral Region, according to reports. The victims have been identified as Sergeant Ateba Olanguena, Chief Corporal Betkemo Banibou and Private First Class Abienza Joseph, who were reportedly serving with the 23rd Battalion of the Intervention Brigade. Reports indicate that the attackers fled with weapons and ammunition belonging to the soldiers after the attack. A group calling itself the Fako/Meme Unity Warriors has claimed responsibility. In a video circulating online, individuals claiming to be members of the group said the ambush was carried out in retaliation for the reported k-illing of three civilians in Ekona. Security measures have reportedly been reinforced in the area as authorities respond to the incident. 16/09/2026Burkina Faso is advancing efforts to strengthen its domestic defence industry with the unveiling of a locally designed and manufactured armoured vehicle. The prototype was presented by Burkinabè company BAT Équipements during SYSDEF 2025 in Ouagadougou. The vehicle has reportedly undergone weapons testing, including exposure to PKMS machine-gun fire, as developers continue work on the prototype. BAT Équipements has also expressed plans to potentially supply similar vehicles to Mali and Niger, its fellow members of the Alliance of Sahel States. The project reflects Burkina Faso’s broader push to develop local capacity for defence equipment production, although some claims surrounding the vehicle’s completion level and its status as the country’s first of its kind remain subject to verification. Several other people were injured during the shooting and rushed to the Nkwen District Hospital and Bamenda Regional Hospital, where they are receiving medical attention. 14/09/2026A family meal in Gougouo, Foumbot, Noun Division, has turned tragic, leaving five people d-ead and 13 others hospitalised. The incident occurred on Wednesday, September 9, after 18 members of the same household reportedly ate kontchap, a traditional maize and beans dish. Shortly after the meal, several family members developed severe symptoms, including vomiting, stomach pain and loss of consciousness. Five subsequently d-ied, including Irène Mfout, the mother who prepared the meal, and some of her children. The 13 survivors were rushed to Foumbot District Hospital, with some reportedly in critical condition. Authorities have opened an investigation, while samples of the food and ingredients have reportedly been collected for laboratory analysis. Possible causes, including food contamination and chemical poisoning, are being investigated. Reports of a reptile allegedly found around the cooking area remain unconfirmed. 06/08/2026Firefighters carried out rescue operations until 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday after severe flooding struck several neighborhoods in Kumba, Southwest Region. The flooding, reported around 2:30 p.m. on August 5, affected Kumba Town, Malabo Quarter, Meta Quarter, and Tchako Street, prompting an emergency response from the 206th Fire Company. Despite rising floodwaters and difficult access, rescue teams saved 22 people, evacuated about 100 residents, and secured several others along with their belongings. Among those rescued were three people trapped on the roof of a house. One of them had been bitten by a snake and was rushed to the Kumba Regional Annex Hospital for treatment.
